THE HERBERT FAMILY PROGRAM FOR YOUNG ADULTS
Lauri & Steve Delson’s Impact on the Local Type 1 Diabetes Community

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is something that is near and dear to Lauri Delson’s heart, as two of her three daughters were diagnosed over 20 years ago.  Watching her daughters grow up with T1D was difficult, but what was the most challenging for Lauri was watching them cope with the responsibilities and challenges that come with adulthood without a solid network of like peers.  Lauri realized that even if a cure was on the horizon, it would not help them deal with the challenges of living with the disease today, and every day.

This realization drove Lauri to make a generous donation to Hoag Hospital Foundation to support the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center and to create the Herbert Family Program for Young Adults (18-30) with T1D. The program addresses the financial, psychological, social and physical changes that challenge not only young adults, but their entire support system.  The program Lauri created is managed by her oldest daughter and features social events, counseling, education, incorporates nutrition therapy, and pump and meter training that the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center offers.

Lauri’s goals for this group are to offer empowerment and hope, and to re-build the confidence many young adults with T1D find diminished as they struggle with health, relationships and independence.   It is because of Lauri’s passion and support that the Herbert Program is reaching young adults with T1D and making a positive impact in their lives.
